Increased risk of Legionella pneumonia as community-acquired pneumonia after heavy rainfall in 2018 in west Japan

AbstractIntroduction Japan experienced a heavy rainfall event from June 28 to July 8, 2018, and many casualties were caused by both flooding. Few studies have investigated patients' characteristics the causative pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia before after events. The aim present study was evaluate clinical hospitalized patients with using prospective cohort data. Methods divided into two periods: November 2013–2017 (before rainfall) 2018 (after rainfall). investigated. Regarding pathogens, adjustments made for precipitation seasonal patterns. Results There no significant differences in number rainfall. However, frequency Legionella significantly higher than (8.9% vs 3.0%, P = 0.02) remained adjusting season. Three 7 engaged reconstruction work 2 had soil exposure. Conclusions An increased risk not only serious flooding, but also following recovery or exposure should be considered.
